Adam Yauch (1964-2012)
MCA, founder of the Beastie Boys, passed away after a long battle with cancer.
When I was a younger lad, I was not one to move around when music was playing. If I was at a concert I might bob my head or sway from side to side. But then I went to a music festival and the Beastie Boys got up on stage. That crazy distorted bassline from Sabotage started playing and before I knew it, I was jumping around like an idiot.
That was the first and only time I was physically possessed by music. Even though I was a bit embarrassed afterward, it is a vivid memory that does not seem to fade. The Beastie Boys were a huge part of my musical upbringing and they still frequent my playlists. Adam was a visionary and made me dance like a monkey.
As is tradition, I am honored to make him a Jedi spirit.
Rest in peace, MCA.
“Together again, huh?”
“Wouldn’t miss it.”

As a boy, he hadn’t wanted things to change. He wanted to keep those he loved close to him forever. Yet everything did change. He was far from his mother. He had lost Darra. Tru. And Qui-Gon. He couldn’t fight against those kinds of losses. So be it. He would have to push them down until they didn’t matter anymore.
One day, he would face his worst loss, the loss of his Master. By surpassing him, he would lose him. He pictured Obi-Wan turning to him in slow surprise, grasping for the first time the true extent of his power. Seeing that the student had outstripped the teacher.
On that day, Anakin’s heart would break for the last time. He would feel the weight of impossible sorrow.
He would not be able to bear that sorrow. Unless he no longer had a heart.

From the AP: Russia’s top military officer has threatened to carry out a pre-emptive strike on U.S.-led NATO missile defense facilities in Eastern Europe if Washington goes ahead with its controversial plan to build a missile shield.
President Dmitry Medvedev said last year that Russia will retaliate militarily if it does not reach an agreement with the United States and NATO on the missile defense system.
Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov went even further Thursday. “A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens,” he said at an international conference attended by senior U.S. and NATO officials.
Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov also warned on Thursday that talks between Moscow and Washington on the topic are “close to a dead end… .”
Makarov’s statement on Thursday doesn’t seem to imply an immediate threat, but aims to put extra pressure on Washington to agree to Russia’s demands… .
“We can’t just reject the distrust that has been around for decades and become totally different people,” Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said in addressing U.S. and NATO officials. “Why are they calling on me, on my Russian colleagues, to reject distrust? Better look at yourselves in the mirror.”
U.S. State Department special envoy Ellen Tauscher responded that neither country can afford another arms race… .
At a later news conference, Tauscher played down Makarov’s comments on pre-emptive measures.
“We’ve heard it before,” she said. “We think that’s off on the horizon. We think they were showing us what could happen. I think we’re far from there, but we’re aware of what they’re saying.” (photo: AP)
What in the hell? I already lost faith in this generation, this just confirmed it.
Not only does she not comprehend what he is trying to say, but she is 20 and her grammar is preposterous.
This makes my head hurt. Oh my god. It’s like she can’t even fathom what he is saying. Dear lord, that’s pathetic.
I feel embarrassed for her, she doesn’t even understand how ignorant she sounds.
